Middle Ear Implants
Middle ear implants are ideal for adults suffering from stable hearing loss, which is bilateral and relatively symmetrical, without fluctuation, in the mild to severe range with normal tympanometry. The fundamental principle of middle ear implants is direct transmission of the mechanical energy produced by amplified sound vibrations to the ossicular chain. Such implants are clearly distinguishable from hearing aids in that sound vibrations are emitted into the ear canal after amplification. The conversion system of electrical signals into mechanical vibrations is either electromagnetic (EM) or piezo-electric (PZ). These implants are also different from bone-anchored devices or BAHAs (Bone anchored hearing aids), which transmit sound to the cochlea through cranial bones and are used only in cases of conductive hearing loss or mixed hearing loss.
