A dermatome is a surgical device that is used to produce thin slices of skin from a donor area, in order to use them for making skin grafts. Its main application is for reconstituting skin areas damaged by grade 3 burns or trauma. It can be operated either manually or electrically. Electrical dermatome is better for cutting out thinner and longer strips of skin with a more homogeneous thickness.

Dermatoscope is straightly placed on the skin surface of the patient to analyze the key morphological structures of skin wounds that are on and below the surface of skin. It provides direct showing and analyze of the epidermis and papillary dermis. It is a magnifier with either cross-polarized or non-polarized light and a liquid medium between the instrument and the skin, thus illuminating the lesion without glare from reflected light. It is used by dermatology physician specialists to help distinguish benign from malignant lesions. It is especially of aid in the diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Dermoscope is a battery-operated handheld microscope-like instrument using epiluminescence for evaluating pigmented skin lesions. It is a non-invasive, diagnostic tool, which visualizes subtle clinical patterns of skin lesions and subsurface skin structures not normally visible to the unaided eye. It has also been called a skin surface microscope, epiluminescence microscope or episcope.
