pH monitoring system is used to measure pH level. This system involves a pH capsule, about the size of a gel cap that is temporarily attached to the wall of the esophagus. The pH capsule measures pH levels in the esophagus and transmits readings via radio telemetry to receiver worn on the patient's belt or waistband.

Phacoemulsification systems possess two major integrated units: fluidic systems consisting of irrigation, aspiration, and cooling; and an ultrasonic system to fragment the lens. Additional components of phacoemulsification systems may include cautery and vitrectomy units. The fluidic system involves the active flow of fluids into and from the anterior chamber of the eye. During phacoemulsification some limited intraocular pressure is produced to maintain the eye at its normal size; this is particularly important in animals in which the low scleral rigidity collapses the anterior segment once aqueous humor is removed. The delivery and egress of balanced salt solution or lactated Ringer's solution is controlled by the ophthalmic surgeon via a foot control which can maintain a balance of irrigation and aspiration to provide sufficient inflation of the anterior segment, facilitate removal of lens fragments, and cool the ultrasonic components.

The Phaco-Emulsification simulation approach is integrated into a real-time virtual reality training system for cataract surgery. For the phacoemulsification task, we model the eye lens as a collection of simplices, built from a tetrahedron mesh, with mass particles placed in tetrahedrons barycenters. Links connecting particles are maintained in order to provide geometrical information for deriving the external triangular mesh for rendering, and for recognizing crystalline lens independent fragments when phacoemulsification is performed. The phacoemulsificator device is modeled by eroding particles.

Phakic IOLs are powerful refractive tools with almost unlimited potential to correct refractive errors. It is able to correct high degrees of nearsightedness that cannot be corrected with other surgical procedures.
