A peripheral nerve stimulator is used when a general anesthetic (anaesthetic) is administered to a patient, as opposed to a local anesthetic. It simulates an electrical impulse in the nerve and the resulting muscle contractions. It is handheld and delivers constant current stimulation patterns. The constant current feature ensures the selected current is actually delivered and thus muscle responses are comparable throughout the entire operation, even if the skin resistance changes.

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) is a form of intravenous access that is used for a prolonged period of time. A PICC is inserted in a peripheral vein, such as the cephalic vein, basilic vein or brachial vein and then advanced through increasingly larger veins, toward the heart until the tip rests in the distal superior vena cava or cavo-atrial junction. PICCs are inserted by radiologists, physician assistants, radiologist assistants or certified registered nurses using ultrasound, chest radiographs and fluoroscopy to aid in the insertion and to confirm placement.
