Hydroxy pregnenolone is stimulated by ACTH and suppressed by dexamethasone. It is the marker steroid for the 3b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficient form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Hydroxy pregnenolone is measured by radioimmunoassay following extraction and purification of specimens.
