Transcranial doppler is a test that measures the velocity of blood flow through the brain's blood vessels. It is useful in assessing intracranial blood flow and for following the status of vascular lesions over time, not in the setting of evolving neurologic compromise. It helps in the diagnosis of emboli, stenosis, vasospasm from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, and other problems.
