A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs. It is a precision differential pressure transducer for the measurements of respiration flow rates. The spirometer records the amount of air and the rate of air that is breathed in and out over a specified time. The evaluation of lung function with a spirometer, is one of the simplest, most common pulmonary function tests and may be necessary for any/all of the following reasons: to determine how well the lungs receive, hold, and utilize air, to monitor a lung disease, to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and to determine the severity of a lung disease.
