A laminar airflow system is an unidirectional ventilation system in which filtered, bacteria-free, ultraclean air is circulated over the patient from a filtered outlet and returned through a receiving air inlet. Air is filtered through high efficiency particulate air filters that remove all particles equal to or greater than 0.3 microns with an efficiency of 99.7%. It can deliver upwards of 200 air exchanges an hour. It is used most often for procedures such as total joint replacement.
