Immune globulin is a sterilized solution obtained from pooled human blood plasma, which contains the immunoglobulins (or antibodies) to protect against the infectious agents that cause various diseases. It is also known as immune serum globulin or gamma globulin. IG is produced using small amounts of antibodies, given by an injection or needle. When injected into a muscle, IG can provide almost immediate, short-term protection against specific illnesses or help make the illness less severe.
