Guidewires contain a safety wire that is anchored to the inner core proximally and to the outer coil distally to prevent separation of these components. Straight wires are relatively traumatic and are rarely used. J-shaped guidewires have tapered, softer distal ends that can be straightened or curled by moving the inner core relative to the outer coil. Floppy-tip guidewires have no core wire in their distal 10-15 cm and are maximally flexible. It meets the demands of critical care, cardiology, radiology, urology, gastroenterology, and various other invasive catheter procedures.
